Taverner Quemadmodum à 6 SAATTB

All of the manuscripts which preserve this work are textless implying that instrumental performance was normal practice. However it has been discovered that the first two verses of the psalm "Quemadmodum desiderat cervum" fit the music perfectly. We have devised our own setting of these words for what we believe is the first time in print. 'Quem" is also most satisfying as an instrumental piece. You have a choice of the original pitch (OK for viols) or a fourth higher (better for recorders).

We are grateful to Mapa Mundi for permission to take these instrumental parts from Martyn Imrie's edition; no 55 in series A, Spanish and Portuguese Church Music. All sections of this mass make wonderful instrumental pieces. The only changes have been to reduce the word setting to entries at key places and to double the bar lengths. Padilla Mexican Church Music à 4 SSAB SATB

In 1629, Juan Gutierrez de Padilla became maestro de capilla at Pueblo Cathedral, the richest musical establishment of the Spanish Empire. These four motets illustrate his intensely expressive style and rich use of harmony. The mood of all of them is sorrowful and agonised and they work very well instrumentally. Mapa Mundi have allowed us to create parts from their Series F No 4 publication of Stabat Mater, Transfige dulcissime Domine, Tristis est anima mea and Velum templi scissum est. No word setting. Chanson Albums of Marguerite of Austria Vol 1 S(A)TTTB SATBB

Four anonymous pieces à 5 from this famous manuscript of the court where Marguerite governed the Estates of the Netherlands from 1506 to 1530. Her life was full of tragedy and this is reflected in the melancholy tone of much of the music. Two of these pieces contain canons; Dueil et ennuy and Quant il advient, and the other two are based on cantus firmus; Coeurs Desolez and Fors seulement. We are indebted to Professor Martin Picker of Rutgers University for permission to use his 1965 edition of these pieces as a basis for our word setting. Full word setting.

Orlandus Lassus Two motets à 6 SAATTB SSATTB

This is another edition that derives from Mapa Mundi originals. Timor et Tremor is available as No 18 in the London Lassus series and Ave regina caelorum is from No 8 of the same series. Timor et Tremor is a powerful piece with spine tingling harmonic shifts which are taxing for players and singers alike but exciting when you get them right! By contrast, Ave regina caelorum is comparatively straightforward and a joyful piece. No word setting but translations provided.

Chansons Albums of Marguerite of Austria Vol 2 SATT ATTB

This manuscript is the main source of the secular work of Pierre de la Rue and this set contains five chansons in four parts, two of which have a rather high range and could, with advantage, be played down an octave. De la Rue seems to have been the favourite composer of Marguerite and most able to reflect her chronic melancholy. Full word setting. We are grateful to Martin Picker for the word underlay: De l' oeil de la fille, Secretz regretz, Il est bien hereux, Pour ce que je suis and Mijn hert altijt.

Pierre de la Rue “ Considera Israel” ATTB

This is the third volume of music from the Chansons Albums of Marguerite of Austria. The four part motet Considera Israel, sets words from Samuel book two, which constitute David's lament on the deaths of Saul and Jonathan. It is a composition of sustained grandeur with contrast provided by lengthy sections in two and three voices. Francisco Guerrero: Missa de la batalla escoutez à 5 SSATB

We published this five part mass to mark the 400th anniversary of Guerrero's death. It is called his battle mass because some of the motifs used are loosely based on Jannequin's chanson “La Guerre”. The music is lively and eminently playable; performance using voices and instruments is to be recommended. Again, we are grateful to Mapa Mundi for permission to publish playing parts from their edition; No 128 in Series A. Scores may be obtained from Mapa Mundi.
